dear nelson

Dear Nelson,

Radium, BC

We've arrived after much thought, preparation and work. Now, the work of LIVING here begins. Please be good to us. Introduce us slowly to your wonders, and don't hide your shadow side. We'll try to be patient with you, and love all of you, including your faults.

Getting closer...

Please don't worry if we talk often about Nova Scotia, Canmore or the Sunshine Coast. We've lived in lots of places but we're finally ready to commit. You're it: the jackpot winner. We'd like to make some new friends but we won't ever forget the old ones - and we'll probably leave from time to time to visit them. Welcome us back from those trips with open arms, and welcome the many visitors we hope to have, too.

The Glass House, near Crawford Bay, BC

If it keeps snowing like this - light and fluffy and easy to shovel - we should get along just fine. Please don't heat up too much in the summer (though we hear the lake provides a wonderful respite), and show us a good autumn display, because we'll miss that from the South Shore of Nova Scotia.

Snowy first night in Nelson

As we hope to make Nelson our home until we're old and grey, we'll have plenty of time to explore and settle in. We have our fingers crossed that we made a good call in coming here, and have a pretty good feeling that we'll be happy here. Just don't expect us to start biking up and down your crazy hills just yet. Old and grey can wait a little longer...

Our new neighbourhood...
,,,and from the back

Thanks already for your open arms: the warmth of our new landlord (who already feels like more of a friend); the smiles and nods from young families like us at the pool, the library, and the local coffee shops; the hugs from old friends, reunited (and our kids giggling like long lost buddies), and most recently the ebullient welcome from a random woman at the Chinese restaurant down the street.

We couldn't have made it here without a lot of love and support from the people and places we've left behind. So, Nelson, help us to build on that sense of community and create a warm, welcoming home, because we're here to stay (for now).
